Ultraman Rising (Netflix)

Netflix has given us some really great family-friendly animated films in recent years – especially during the summer months (that’s winter for Australians). Of Ultraman: Get upone of June’s new Netflix films, the streaming giant hopes to achieve a similar level of success.

Christopher Sean voices Ken Sato, a Japanese-born American baseball star who is forced to return to his home island to take on the superhero mantle of Ultraman amid numerous monster attacks. However, when Sato accidentally becomes the adoptive father of a 30-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby Kaiju, he is charged with not only keeping Tokyo safe, but also protecting the baby monster from falling into the wrong hands. Presumed Innocent (Apple TV Plus)

“I didn’t kill her.” If you take anything away from Apple’s new legal thriller series Presumably innocent – a TV remake of the 1990 film of the same name starring Harrison Ford and the 1987 novel of the same name – it is that Jake Gyllenhaal’s protagonist did not commit the crime he is accused of.

Or so he says. In the thrilling Apple TV Plus drama, Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich, Chicago’s deputy chief prosecutor, is identified as the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), Sabich’s colleague with whom he had an extramarital affair.

Based on the 78% critical and 84% audience scores Rotten tomatoes, Presumably innocent is off to an exciting start on the streamer. Expect to see it on our list of the best Apple TV Plus shows soon.

Monkey Man (Peacock)

Originally intended to stream exclusively on Netflix before Jordan Peele picked up the rights to release it theatrically, Monkey man (now available from Peacock) has – through no fault of his own – been regularly compared to the Johannes Wick movies.

With its hard-hitting and violent action, plus its revenge-driven story, it’s easy to see why, but just call it one Johannes Wick clone is a disservice to Dev Patel’s feature film debut (he’s in it, by the way). It could indeed tell the story of a son’s quest to get revenge on the people responsible for his mother’s death years ago, but with its socio-political commentary, mythos-infused themes and wildly ambitious fight scenes and camerawork , Monkey man is a stunning action film in its own right.

Origin (Hulu)

The critically acclaimed biographical drama, directed by Ava DuVernay, arrives five months after its theatrical release. Origin will aim to reach a wider audience due to its underperformance at the global box office.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor plays Isabel Wilkerson, the first black journalist to win the Pulitzer Prize for her investigative efforts. One of June’s new Hulu movies, Origin follows Wilkerson’s world journey as she writes her second book – Caste: the origin of our discontentwhich was published in August 2020 – while simultaneously dealing with personal tragedy.

With its 82% critical and 97% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, Origin clearly deserves to be seen by more people. Now that it’s out on Hulu (in the US), there’s no excuse not to watch it. One to add to our best Hulu movie guide in the near future.
