7 New Movies and TV Shows to Stream This Weekend (July 5) on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and More

It’s always a treat when blockbuster theatrical releases finally make their way to streamers, and this week we see the money-grubbing monster fighter Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom debut at Max.

Elsewhere, Eddie Murphy returns to duty in Beverly Hills agent: Axel F. on Netflix, while Space Cadet begins streaming on Prime Video. It’s also Shark Week 2024, so there are plenty of shark-themed documentaries to enjoy on Hulu and Disney Plus, even if you’ve already exhausted our recommendations for shark-inspired monster movies.

Below, we’ve rounded up the biggest new movies and TV shows you can stream this weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more.

Sometimes a movie is so downright ridiculous that it just to work. Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom – which is now showing on Max – is such a film.

This sequel to the equally absurd Godzilla vs. Kong finds the titular monsters teaming up to defeat a colossal threat lurking deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, and Brian Tyree Henry all reprise their roles from the previous film, as do—of course!—Godzilla and Kong.

Don’t expect Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom to rewrite the action movie rulebook, but if you’re looking for something to ease your mind this weekend, this is probably one of the best Max movies. UK viewers will have to wait a little longer for it to hit streamers, though.

Now available to stream on Max in the US.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (Netflix)

30 years after he last wore his blue badge and gun, Eddie Murphy reprises his role as famed Beverly Hills cop Axel Foley in the aptly named Beverly Hills agent: Axel F. on Netflix.

In this sequel-cum-reboot, Foley is thrown back into the fight when the lives of his daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) and old partner Billy (Judge Reinhold) are in danger. As a result, Foley teams up with Jane and her ex-boyfriend Detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to uncover a dangerous conspiracy (quelle surprise!).

Critics have described Beverly Hills agent: Axel F. as “formulaic” but “still funny,” so while it may not be one of the best Netflix movies, it sounds like a film worth watching for existing fans of the franchise.

Now available to stream on Netflix.

Space Cadet (Prime Video)

This week’s theme of pensive, slow-burning indie films (not…) continues with: Space Cadet on Prime Video.

This made-for-streaming film stars Emma Roberts as a Florida party girl whose fabricated resume lands her a spot in NASA’s astronaut training program (think Legally Blonde meets First man). Of course, she does about as well as you would expect.

Tom Hopper, Poppy Liu and Gabrielle Union also star Space Cadetthose critics have described as “lazy streaming sloppiness” (ouch!). Still, it might be a good one to run in the background.

A rare recommendation for Roku streaming stick owners: The Real Brothers of Simi Valley: High School Reunion is now available on The Roku Channel.
