7 New Movies and TV Shows to Stream This Weekend (July 26) on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and More
It’s been an unusually quiet week in the streaming world. Not necessarily from a breaking news perspective â there’s always something to write about â but certainly from a new releases perspective. We wonder if the theatrical launch of Deadpool and Wolverinethe first and only Marvel film of 2024, has something to do with that… (Psst! read our Deadpool and Wolverine (check this out while you’re here).
But we digress. If, unlike us, youâre not going to be watching any of the most exciting new movies of 2024 and would rather stream something at home, weâve got you covered. From new TV Originals from Netflix and Apple TV Plus to the first of many Peacock round-up shows showcasing the biggest moments from the 2024 Olympic Games, which kick off July 26, thereâs still plenty to keep you entertained this weekend. Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson (Peacock)
The 2024 Olympic Games, taking place in Paris, France, finally kicked off today (Friday 26th July). If youâre wondering where to stream all the best action from around the world, read our guide on how to watch the 2024 Olympic Games.
âBut what if Iâm at work and canât watch them in real time?â we hear you say. Well, donât worry, because Peacock (in the US) is bringing you all the most notable moments from one of the worldâs biggest sporting events. An eight-part series, Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson the comedy duo, complete with their humorous flair, will tackle the most notable moments from this yearâs event. The first episode airs tonight, with two to three new entries debuting each week until the Games conclude on August 11.
Not in the US? British viewers can watch daily Olympic highlights on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, while Australian viewers can do the same on Channel Nine.
The Decameron (Netflix)
The new steamy medieval series The Decameron resembling Love Island meet the bubonic plague. The show follows a group of nobles and servants who retreat to a villa as the Black Death spreads across Italy, but their lavish getaway quickly turns into a disaster. Their vulgar rendezvous is quickly cut short when the wealthy partygoers fall ill and all morals are forgotten.
The Decameron is loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s collection of short stories of the same name, in which the nobles and servants tell each other stories to pass the time while they shelter from the Black Death at Villa Santa outside Florence. Raise a cup to The Decameron since you’ve been invited to the 14th century party this weekend. Given the mixed reception, it may not be invited to be part of our best Netflix series guide.
Time Bandits (Apple TV Plus)
If the name of this new Apple TV series sounds familiar, that’s because it’s based on the Terry Gilliam ’80s film of the same name. This time around, Flight of the Conchords‘Jermaine Clement and Jojo Rabbit Director Taika Waititi is helming the project, remaking the story for Apple TV, marking the first time the film has appeared on the small screen.
Friends star Lisa Kudrow leads an eccentric gang of outlaws on epic adventures while evil forces pose countless threats along the way. On their travels, they witness the creation of Stonehenge, the Trojan Horse in action, escape dinosaurs in prehistoric times, and wreak havoc in the Middle Ages. So if youâre up for some time-travel mayhem, this is the show for you. One to add to our guide to the best Apple TV Plus shows? Depending on how popular it proves to be.
Charlie Hustle and the Pete Rose Affair (Max)
You may have noticed that baseball is missing from the list of 45 sports categories at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. If thatâs a bummer, youâll be happy to hear that Max is hosting a new docuseries about one of the most polarizing figures in the history of hitting.
HBO’s Charlie Hustle and the Pete Rose Affair is a four-part documentary about MLB legend Pete Rose, who was given a lifetime ban after it was revealed he gambled on games. It is a retrospective featuring hard-hitting interviews with speakers who offer insightful perspectives on the real-life drama that unfolded in 1989.
Knox is leaving (Max)
Michael Keaton’s latest action film Knox is leaving is the perfect choice if youâre looking for a fast-paced thriller this weekend. He directed and starred in the film, in which he plays the title character Knox, a hitman who is diagnosed with a rapidly progressing form of dementia and given the chance to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged son.
If youâre looking for an all-star cast, this film features Al Pacino and James Marsden in supporting roles, so youâll get familiar faces and plenty of exciting sequences. It also has a nice running time of just under two hours, making it perfect for a cozy night in. Possibly a film to include on our list of best Max films.
Resurrected Rides (Netflix)
Resurrected rides offers a fresh twist on the MTV favorite classic Pimp my car which ran from 2004-07 using modern automotive art to help owners transform their old cars with custom makeovers. Executive produced by Pimp my ride co-creator Rick Hurvitz, Resurrected rides sees comedian Chris Redd team up with auto experts to breathe new life into battered vehicles.
You don’t have to be a car fanatic to enjoy it Resurrected rides, So if you’re in the mood for a relaxing backseat ride this weekend, try this series on motorcycle makeovers.
The Ministry of Indecent Warfare (Prime Video)
This weekend’s big recommended blockbuster action movie is Guy Ritchie’s new film The Ministry of Indecent Warfare on Prime Video. Based on the true story of the first-ever special forces operation created during World War II by Winston Churchill, this slick spy comedy follows an ensemble cast of rebellious mavericks and scoundrels played by Henry Cavill, Eiza GonzĂĄlez, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Henry Golding as they embark on a daring mission known in real life as Operation Postmaster.
The film is very loosely based on Damien Lewis’s 2014 book Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII. It is indeed an exaggerated version of the truth, with quirky characters and big-screen action scenes, spiced with witty dialogue and plenty of explosions. If you are a fan of spy movies, then you will love this true early version of Bond, with a character based on Ian Fleming before he created the James Bond character. One to keep an eye on on our list of the best Prime Video movies? Perhaps.
