7 new movies and TV shows on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and more this weekend (October 14)

>

The spooky season (read: October) is in full swing, so it’s no surprise that this weekend’s streaming service additions pick up where last week’s new movies and TV shows left off.

Coming in on the heels of Werewolf by Night, Hellraiser and The Midnight Club over the next few days is a veritable plethora of exciting options. Among that number are Halloween Ends on Peacock, The Northman on Prime Video, and The Watcher on Netflix.

There’s also plenty of new content to stream on Apple TV Plus, Hulu, and HBO Max, if you’re in the mood for something less, well, horrifying. Below, we’ve rounded up seven of the biggest new movies and TV shows to watch this weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and more.

Halloween ends (Peacock)

Possibly the biggest of this year new horror movies is Halloween Ends, a direct sequel to Halloween Kills – which hits theaters in October 2021 – that (presumably) brings an end to John Carpenter’s long-running film franchise.

Series mainstays Michael Myers (Nick Castle and James Jude Courtney) and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) return to the fray in this inevitably familiar cat-and-mouse slasher, though we expect at least one of the two to finally be in the dust bites for good.

Those in the US can watch Halloween Ends stream exclusively on Peacock, while UK viewers should head to their nearest theater to see who comes out on top.

The Norse (prime video)

Robert Eggers’ gory Norwegian revenge epic, The Northman, debuted in theaters in April and hits the Prime Video movie catalog this weekend.

succession Actor Alexander Skarsgård stars as Amleth, a young prince in medieval Scandinavia who embarks on a brutal quest to avenge the memory of his father (Ethan Hawke) and rescue his mother (Nicole Kidman) from the clutches of his treacherous uncle (Claes Bang) .

If all that sounds very Game of Thrones, it’s because The Northman indeed mixes violence, betrayal, and incest into a classy (but exceptionally bleak) tale of Norse mythology. Expect a lot of screaming and a lot of bloodshed from this one.

Now available to stream on Prime Video.

The Playlist (Netflix)

Netflix produces so much so-so content these days that it can be easy to miss its occasional genius (Weird stuff despite).

The playlista six-episode Swedish-language series that traces the making of Spotify, is one of the streamer’s more successful recent assignments. It follows company founder Daniel Ek (Edvin Endre of Vikings) as he tries to disrupt an unwilling music industry with his bold new vision for his on-demand future.

We gave the series five stars our glowing review – not a rating we give lightly, mind you – we describe it as brilliantly scripted, surprisingly funny and possibly the best drama of the year. Do not miss it.

The Viewer (Netflix)

After shaking popular culture – for better or worse – with Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Storyseries creator Ryan Murphy returns to Netflix this weekend with a second limited series titled The Watcher.

Like Monster, this one is based on a true story, but instead focuses on a married couple who, after moving into their dream home in the suburbs, are terrorized by an anonymous neighborhood stalker. Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale and Jennifer Coolidge are among the impressive cast of the series.

Critics haven’t had a chance to praise or mock The Watcher yet, but we’re willing to bet Murphy’s latest small-screen story is just as gripping as its tortuous synopsis suggests. Will it make it onto our list of the best Netflix shows? You will have to wait.

Shantaram (Apple TV Plus)

Sons of Anarchy fans, take note! Charlie Hunnam returns to the small screen as the lead in Shantaram, the last original Apple TV show.

Based on the novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts, this 12-episode (twelve!) series follows Lin (Hunham), an Australian prison escapee on the run in Bombay in the 1980s. Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) and Eric Warner Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) are the screenwriters of the show.

The early criticism of Shantaram has been decidedly mixed so far, but it’s likely to please fans of slow-burning cat-and-mouse thrillers. Three episodes will stream on Apple TV Plus today, and the remaining nine will air weekly every Friday.

Avenue 5 Season 2 (HBO Max)

Armando Iannucci’s space comedy series Avenue 5 returns this weekend for its second season on HBO Max.

In new episodes, hapless Captain Clark (Hugh Laurie) is once again forced to deal with several interstellar mishaps aboard the titular Avenue 5 starship. Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Iris Kimura and most of the cast from the first season also return to battle.

Episode 1 of this HBO Max series is now available to stream, with the remaining episodes arriving every Monday. UK viewers can watch the show’s return on Sky and Now.

Rosaline (Hulu)

If you’re in the mood for yet another take on Shakespeare’s classic love story, Romeo and Juliet, Rosaline from Hulu has you covered.

This Hulu movie adaptation of the age-old story (which is itself an adaptation of Rebecca Serle’s 2013 novel When You Were Mine) is told from the perspective of Juliet’s niece, Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever) — who also happens to be Romeo’s most recent love interest.

Kyle Allen, Isabela Merced, Minnie Driver and Bradley Whitford also star in this Verona comedy film, streaming on Disney Plus for viewers in the UK.
