7 new movies and TV shows on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and more this weekend (January 6)

>

Let’s face it: January is a terrible month. The holidays are over, work is resumed in earnest and summer is still *looks at notes* half a year away. That said, the New Year’s doom and gloom hasn’t stopped the top streaming services from offering plenty of new movies and TV shows over the coming weekend.

Leading the way in 2023 is The Menu, which arrives less than two months after its theatrical debut on HBO Max in the US and Disney Plus in the UK. The Bad Batch season 2 also starts streaming this weekend on Disney Plus, while Christian Bale returns to detective mode in The Pale Blue Eye on Netflix.

Below, we’ve rounded up more of the biggest new movies and shows to watch on streaming services in the coming days. So what are you waiting for? Dig in!

The critically acclaimed kitchen drama-mystery thriller The Menu is now available to stream on HBO Max in the US and Disney Plus in the UK.

Directed by regular Succession collaborator Mark Mylod, the film stars Ralph Fiennes as a celebrity chef whose exclusive tasting menu ensures diners Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo get more than they bargained for.

To say more about the plot of The Menu risks ruining the biggest surprises, but rest assured this riotous black comedy packs more twists than a spinning helter skelter.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2 (Disney Plus)

After an 18-month hiatus, the Star Wars animated spin-off (and one of the best Disney Plus shows) The Bad Batch returns for its highly anticipated second season.

Continuing the intergalactic adventures of Clone Force 99, The Bad Batch Season 2 finds Hunter, Tech, Wrecker, Echo, Crosshair, and the group’s young sidekick – Omega – struggling with the fallout from Emperor Palpatine’s plans for dispossessed Standard Model Clone troopers.

The first two episodes of the new season are now available to stream on Disney Plus, with the remaining 14 episodes arriving every Wednesday through March 29.

The Light Blue Eye (Netflix)

Christian Bale puts on an older (and slightly less high-tech) detective suit new Netflix movie The light blue eye.

Based on Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name, this 1830s crime thriller stars Bale as Augustus Landor, a skilled clue hunter who enlists the help of a young Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling) to solve a series of murders. unload. the United States Military Academy. Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Toby Jones and Charlotte Gainsbourg also feature.

Despite the quality of the cast, The Pale Blue Eye has so far received a lukewarm reception from critics, so we don’t expect this bleak Victorian drama to break into our list of the best netflix movies shortly.

The Rig (first video)

Prime Video regularly releases new action shows these days, and Amazon’s latest offering, The Rig, takes the streamer in a refreshingly supernatural direction.

With Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) and Martin Compston, this six-part thriller series follows a group of Scottish oil rig workers whose plans to return to the safety of the mainland are shattered when a mysterious fog plunges them into darkness.

If we’re being honest, we didn’t think The Rig looked all that exciting on first viewing of the trailer, but critics have hailed the show as “high-purity binge-TV nirvana.” We hope it deserves a spot on our list of the best prime video series.

Copenhagen Cowboy (Netflix)

Not to be confused with other Netflix productions Cocaine Cowboy, Concrete Cowboy and Cowboy Bepop, Copenhagen Cowboy marks just the second TV project from Drive director (and Hideo Kojima favorite) Nicolas Winding Refn.

This six-episode Danish-language series focuses on Miu (Angela Bundalovic), a mysterious woman with supernatural abilities who embarks on a dangerous (and neon-drenched) odyssey through Copenhagen’s criminal underworld.

Critical reception to Copenhagen Cowboy has been decidedly mixed so far, but Refn’s films and series are known to be slowly but surely gaining traction. Maybe it will be one of them best netflix shows from 2023?
