7 new movies and TV shows on Netflix, Max, Prime Video and more this weekend (September 1)

Summer is officially over, but streaming services are waiting for no one. To help ease your fall blues, companies like Netflix, Max, and Prime Video have deemed it necessary to offer plenty of new movies and TV shows this weekend.

The main act of the newcomers is A piece on Netflix, the latest in a long line of small screen adaptations based on Eiichiro Oda’s wildly popular manga series. Prime Video subscribers can also enjoy a new fantasy adventure in September in the form of The Wheel of Time season 2.

One Piece (Netflix)

Attention, anime fans: A piece — often referred to as a member of the “Big Three” animations — is now streaming on Netflix in live-action form.

This English-language adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s groundbreaking manga series follows a group of young pirates – led by Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) – as they search for the ultimate treasure in a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands.

The Wheel of Time season 2 (Prime Video)

One of the best Prime Video shows, The Wheel of Timereturns this weekend for its highly anticipated second season.

New installments of the critically acclaimed fantasy drama are derived from Robert Jordan’s second and third novels The Wheel of Time series – that is The Great Hunt And The Dragon Reborn – featuring humble farm boy Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) who is now fully aware of his destiny as a world-saving messiah. But even though Rand thought he had destroyed the Dark One at the end of Season 1, new threats are emerging that endanger Jordan’s fantastic world.

In our The Wheel of Time season 2 reviewwe said the new season “feels more confident than its predecessor,” but ultimately “continues to suffer from blatant plot pacing and other stumbles.” That said, returning fans of the series will likely find plenty of magical mayhem to enjoy.

Power Book IV: Force Season 2 (Starz, Prime Video)

If you are a bit confused about how many seasons Current since the series debuted in 2014, you’re not alone – but at least we can tell you that Power Book IV: Power Season 2 is now streaming on Starz in the US and Prime Video in the UK.

This follow-up season to the Courtney A. Kem spin-off hit crime drama (have we got that, right?) keeps the focus on Tommy Egan, whose quest to avenge Liliana’s death lands him even more in trouble with Chicago’s. drug lords and the FBI.

The first episode of Power Book IV: Power Season 2 is now available to stream, with the remaining nine episodes airing weekly every Friday through October 20, 2023.

Disillusionment Season 5 (Netflix)

The popular animated fantasy series from Netflix, Disillusionmentdeflects this weekend with its fifth and final season.

New episodes of the Matt Groening-created sitcom will continue (and presumably connect) the stories of Bean, Elfo, Luci, and the rest of the Dreamland gang, with the stakes “as high as ever,” according to Netflix’s official synopsis.

Sagittarius Season 14 (Hulu)

Another adult animated series that is going to be a blast this weekend is Archerwhose fourteenth (fourteenth!) season is now streaming on Hulu.

In this final appearance for the beloved FX comedy show, Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) and his equally dysfunctional colleagues from the International Secret Intelligence Service are on a mission to make money while saving the world (because why can’t spies do both?).

Critics have described Archer season 14 as “the best the show has been in years”, so existing series fans should make it a point to stream it on Hulu this weekend (UK viewers will probably have to wait until 2024 for the same fun).

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake (Max)

Beloved animated series Adventure Time gets the spin-off treatment this weekend Adventure Time: Fionna and Cakewhich is now streaming on Max.

This 10-episode series follows the alternate universe versions of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog – also known as Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat – as they journey through the multiverse. Tom Kenny, Madeleine Martin, Roz Ryan, Donald Glover, and Andrew Rannells are among the series’ stacked voice cast.

The first two episodes of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake are now available to stream on Max, with the remaining eight episodes airing weekly every Thursday through October 26, 2023. No UK release information has yet been shared for the series.
