A group of 62 Republicans in the House of Representatives are pushing for a new resolution insisting that Donald Trump did not participate in an insurrection during the January 6 Capitol riot.
Trump has been removed from the primaries in Maine and Colorado — and now the Supreme Court will hear arguments in the legal battle this week.
“We are here today to authoritatively express that President Trump did not commit an insurrection, and we believe Congress has a unique role in making that declaration,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who led the resolution led, at a press conference. conference Tuesday.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, who co-sponsored the resolution, accused Democrats of “tearing up the Constitution” in an effort to stop Trump.

“All bogus cases against President Trump are clear election interference. It is an act of fear,” said Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court will grapple for the first time with a constitutional provision adopted after the civil war to prevent former officeholders who had “revolted” from regaining power.
The case has the potential to upend the presidential election by throwing Trump off the ballot box.
“Not one person has been convicted of insurrection, not one in every court in our country. No one has been charged and convicted of insurrection. Yet every day, Democrats and dishonest people in the media accused President Trump of waging an insurrection,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
‘You know, what’s ironic? None of the (rioters) were armed,” Rep. Eric Burlison said. “It’s ridiculous to say that someone with face paint and bison horns was here to take over the Capitol.”

The resolution also comes after an appeals court ruled Tuesday that Trump does not have immunity in a case related to the 2020 election.
“Any executive branch immunity that may have protected him while he was president no longer protects him from this prosecution,” the three-judge panel ruled unanimously, in a blow to prosecutor Jack Smith.
In his case, Trump is accused of using false claims of voter fraud to pressure lawmakers, Justice Department officials and then-Vice President Mike Pence to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.
It is the second time in as many months that judges have rejected Trump’s argument that he is immune from prosecution for actions he took while in office and leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives resolution states that it is “the feeling of the House of Representatives” that former President Trump “has not engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or afforded aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”
“You are receiving this email because your boss has endorsed President Trump, and we would like to have your support as an original co-sponsor before we send the resolution and list of sponsors to the former president,” read an email from Gaetz’ staff at Republican offices.

“This resolution is a no-brainer – controversial only to the far left – and a statement of fact that every Republican is expected to support,” the report continued.
“If the left has the courage to interfere in our elections and weaponize the justice system against our brothers, we must have the courage to express what is taken for granted.”
If the resolution comes to the table, it could once again force Republicans to make public whether or not they pledge allegiance to former President Donald Trump and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election — for which he is being sued.
Republicans already rose to prominence in the House of Representatives in 2021 when ten of them joined Democrats in voting to impeach Trump for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot.
Only Reps. David Valadao, California, and Dan Newhouse, Washington, survived the 2022 midterm elections after Trump provoked primary retaliation against the other eight Republicans who voted to impeach him.
