The majority of households with an annual income of Rs 5 lakh and above are in the top 20 percent, or about 150, districts in the country, according to a report by ClarityX, a data analytics firm backed by MapmyIndia, released on Tuesday.

The ClarityX District Potential Index 2024 report, based on MapmyIndia database and government data sources, shows that light intensity in the region has increased significantly over the past four years, from 17 to 30 percent.

“60 percent of households with annual income above Rs 5 lakh are in the top 20 percent (about 150) districts of India, and two-thirds of the total number of districts above the All-India District median are in the Western region, which also has the highest share of fastest growing districts,” the report said.

The report measures district growth based on a District Potential Index (DPI) that includes socio-economic indicators such as income distribution, social drivers such as health care, per capita education facilities, availability of infrastructure, financial activities such as banking coverage, etc.

A comparison was made between the 2019 and 2023 DPI scores to measure growth.

The report shows that the number of districts in India has grown from 723 districts in 2019 to 788, spread across 36 states.

“Bengaluru Urban and Hyderabad districts emerge as the top two leaders with the highest score in 2023, across all 788 districts. In the central and eastern regions, Jharkhand and Tripura emerge as the states with the highest growth. Some of the fastest growing states are in the north – Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh,” the report said.

According to the report, the health infrastructure has improved significantly, with the number of health facilities per 1,000 inhabitants increasing from about 263 to 903.
