5-year-old girl killed in tragic truck collision while in crosswalk of Arizona street

A five-year-old Arizona girl died after she was hit by a truck while crossing the street with her mother and five other children.

Ariyah Marie Elias was struck on December 26 at the intersection of East Guadalupe and South Hawes Road in Mesa.

Ariyah, her mother Alora Silva and several other neighborhood children crossed the road as the traffic light changed from red to green.

The truck driver, who was driving along western Guadalupe, told police they didn’t see the group until it was too late.

“When she was hit, it spun her around and [her mother] saw her flying through the air. No one should have to experience that,” Ariyah’s father, Jordan Elias, said 12News.

Police rushed to the scene to perform life-saving measures and the child was taken to Banner Desert Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

‘I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemies. This is the worst thing anyone can experience,” Silva told 12News through tears.

“I feel guilty, I feel like I have ruined not only my daughter’s life, but the lives of other children who witnessed this.”

Mesa police have launched an investigation into the horrific incident. Police have not released the identity of the driver and no charges have been filed. The devastated family hopes this will change soon.

Silva told the outlet, “I want some answers. I want justice for my daughter.

‘She didn’t deserve to go. I needed her and I loved her so much.”

Ariyah’s parents have one GoFundMe titled ‘Help support Ariyah’s family in grief.’

The page reads: ‘No matter how much we try, there is no meaning to it, and there never will be.

“Trying to put it into words doesn’t make it any less cruel. A perfect little girl, our baby, just gone, because that night the world decided to show its teeth and bite down hard.

“What happened on that wide stretch of road, as the lights changed and the world spun out of control, was not fair, it was not right.”

Ariyah celebrated her fifth birthday on November 26 – just one month before her tragic death.

So far, the child’s family has raised more than $3,100 for funeral expenses.

On the same day Ariyah died, a Canadian nine-year-old girl died after the car she was riding in was hit by an alleged robber who ran a red light in an attempt to evade police.

Victoria Desjardins, her sister Madison, 12, and her mother Amanda Reitmeier were in their family car when a man driving a stolen car struck them in Calgary, Canada, causing a five-car crash.

Victoria, Madison and Amanda were all taken to hospital in critical condition. Victoria tragically died as a result of her serious injuries.

The suspected perpetrator, Duane Arlen Nepoose, 30, was arrested at the scene at the intersection of Southland Drive and Macleod Trail South.

Before the car accident, Nepoose allegedly robbed a nearby Pharmasave. Police said he attacked the pharmacist and stole his car. CTV News reported.

He sped away from the pharmacy and refused to stop for police before making the fatal decision to run a red light, causing a collision with four other cars.

Nepoose is facing a raft of charges in relation to the alleged offences, including theft, theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing police, dangerous driving causing death and three charges of dangerous driving.
