5 things you need to know before watching Aquaman 2
After years of delays, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is finally here to conclude the ups and downs of DC's current cinematic universe. Although production has undergone some major changes, we are sure that Warner Bros. Pictures a fresh start for a new, less connected DC cinematic universe is underway. Aquaman 2.
But before you see the future of the new DCU, here's everything you need to know about Jason Momoa's Aquaman's final adventure before you see the movie:
Is there a post-credits scene?
Unsurprisingly, there's a mid-credits scene in the latest Aquaman movie. It happens after the main credits and before the names start scrolling behind the lines – but don't expect a big one Aquaman 3 reveals. Plus, there's no end-credits scene, so if you want to stretch your legs and head outside, that's your choice.
Is this movie part of James Gunn's new DCU?
No. There are currently no plans for Aquaman to join James Gunn's universe. That doesn't mean the character will never appear, but it probably does mean that Jason Momoa's version probably won't continue into the new universe.
Will there be another Aquaman movie?
2018 Aquarius made an absolutely enormous amount of money, making it the highest-grossing DC film of all time. So it's not entirely impossible to think that, like the moneymaker of 2019 joker, Aquaman could remain a standalone series. But shifting Aquaman to “Elseworlds” doesn't seem to be in the cards, as there's no indication that Momoa's Arthur Curry will be part of the upcoming iteration of the DC Cinematic Universe.
That hasn't stopped Momoa lobbying to join Gunn's new universe in another capacityas he has said, he is also happy to come in as a new character.
Where does Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom take place in the DCEU/Snyderverse timeline?
This is the final film in the Snyderverse timeline, but it doesn't technically take place at the end of that timeline. When we are counting Zack Snyder's Justice League if the canon version of the film, then that film's flash forward, where we see Batman and other heroes in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, is the furthest point in the existing timeline. Other than that (and bits and pieces of The flash), Aquaman is the last film in chronological order.
Does Amber Heard star in this movie?
Heard's participation in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was called into question when the lawsuit between Heard and ex-husband Johnny Depp became a social media frenzy that drew ire from almost everyone on both sides of the celebrity ranks. Executives from Heard and Warner Bros. have cast their votes conflicting accounts whether her role was reduced and why.
What we do know is that Lost kingdom underwent many reworks, and when Heard was barely in the initial trailers, there was rampant speculation that she might not appear much in the film. This turned out not to be the case.
(Ed. remark: What follows contains some mild spoilers for the film.)
Whatever the re-edits were – apparently mainly to remove references to the ongoing Snyderverse version of the DCU – Heard is certainly still in the film. She doesn't play as big a role in this sequel as she did in the first, with most of the focus on the relationship between Arthur Curry and Orm. Whether her diminished role stemmed from simple storytelling decisions or something more calculated is for those involved to unravel in the future.
