4 underrated Netflix Geeked Week 2023 reveals that you might have missed
We came, we saw, and we left with almost as many questions as before: Netflix’s Geeked Week 2023 is over, leaving behind countless teaser trailers.
Movies like Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moonthat resembles the epic science fiction fantasy franchise that Netflix was going for, the dark fairy tale Lady, who sees Stranger thingsMillie Bobby Brown takes one Game of Thrones-like dragon, And 3 Body problem, which looks like a mind-bending sci-fi series may have generated most of the excitement, but there were also plenty of other really interesting announcements and teasing trailers.
Here are some of our favorites for the coming year.
Jurassic World: Chaos Theory
The one from Netflix Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is a sequel to the Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous series that promises “a new era of chaos” after the park closes and the kingdom falls. Anything with a roaring T-Rex is pretty much guaranteed a place on our to-watch list, and the tone of the teaser feels a lot darker than previous series – so while this one is aimed at a younger audience than the films, it should should still be enough for the adults to sink their terrible teeth into. Who’s behind the scenes is just as interesting: Steven Spielberg is executive producer alongside Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, and Frank Marshall, who produced the Jurassic World trilogy. The series’ launch date has yet to be confirmed, but it is scheduled for 2024.
Dead boy detectives
Do you have an annoying ghost haunting you? Did a demon steal your core memories? Then it is best to call us Dead boy detectives. The mystery-solving and obviously dead detectives are based on characters created by Matt Wagner and Neil Gaiman, whose spectacular The sandman was one of our favorite Netflix shows from last year. The show also survived near-cancellation: it was originally made for Max, but a change of priorities on Max’s part has now seen it moved to Netflix. The eight episodes promise all kinds of supernatural fun, including evil witches, escaping from hell and battling death themselves. The show could also be one that makes your heart race: when it was first announced, it was described as a ghost story that explores loss, grief and death. This one is “coming soon”.
The Sun brothers
The Zon brothers is a dark action comedy series set in LA and Taiwan, and follows Taipei gangster and accomplished assassin Charles Sun – the sun of the title. When his father is murdered by a mysterious killer, Sun travels to LA to protect his brother and his mother. The brother knows nothing of his older sibling’s deadly work, or that their father was a formidable crime boss, and his world is soon turned upside down by the new knowledge and the danger that comes with it. The lead role is played by Justin Chien alongside a top-notch Asian cast including Sam Song Li, Highdee Kuan and Joon Lee. Michelle Yeoh is also on board as Sun’s “cunning and observant” mother. This looks like it could be great. The film will be available to stream from January 4, 2024.
Masters of the Universe: Revolution
Not to be confused with the title of the same name Revelationof which it is the sequel, Masters of the Universe: Revolution is the new series of Kevin Smith’s sequel/reboot to He-Man – and this time there’s a clear Terminator reference to He-Man’s arch-enemy Skeletor. Vibes-wise, this reboot seems to be the solution Dark Knight to the campy Batman from the original He-Man cartoons, as this He-Man struggles with new responsibility and tries to decide whether he should be king or champion. Featuring a voice cast including Mark Hamill, William Shatner and Lena Headey, this is one to add to your list, and you won’t have to wait long: it premieres in January 2024.
