AUTRYVILLE, N.C. — Officers responding to a call about shots fired in North Carolina on Sunday found four people shot to death at what appeared to be a homeless campsite, authorities said.

An initial investigation of the crime scene revealed that someone had killed three people before killing himself, Sampson County Sheriff’s Captain Eric Pope told WRAL-TV.

Two men and two women were found dead around a tent at the end of a private road full of huge potholes near Autryville, authorities said.

The names of the people killed have not been released and Pope said investigators are still gathering evidence to determine exactly how the shootings occurred.

Autryville is located about 60 miles south of Raleigh, the state capital.
