38 people are confirmed dead and 87 injured when two buses collided near Kaffrine in central Senegal today.

Since then, the wreckage and demolished buses have been cleared and normal traffic has resumed, Col. Cheikh Fall said.

The governor and local officials have visited the site, he added.

Traffic accidents are common in Senegal, largely due to driver indiscipline, poor roads and decrepit vehicles, experts say.

Yet this is one of the highest numbers of deaths from a single incident in recent years.
