Former acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney handicapped the 2024 Republican primary and name-dropped three potential candidates he believed could give his ex-boss, former President Donald Trump, trouble.
‘DeSantis could give him a run for his money. Tim Scott can give him a run for his money Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could give him a run for his money,’ Mulvaney told Politico’s Playbook. ‘It’s a short list.’
Mulvaney, who was Trump’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, before sliding into the chief of staff position, before becoming the ex-president’s Special Envoy for Northern Ireland, said Trump, himself, could derail 2024 plans.

‘By the way, there’s one other person who could beat him – which is himself,’ Mulvaney said. ‘Donald Trump is somtimes his own worst enemy when it comes to campaigning.’
Trump has said he’ll wait to announce a 2024 run until after the November midterm races.
Former President Donald Trump has said he won’t announce his 2024 intentions until after the 2022 midterms. He’s already holding rallies in key swing states, like one in North Carolina Saturday (pictured)
He’s already been holding near-weekly campaign rallies in swing states for both the midterms and the 2024 general election.
On Wednesday, he announced a rally on April 23 in Ohio – where there’s a key Senate race.
Trump has continued to lead in the polls when Republican voters are asked their preference for 2024.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in second in the Conservative Political Action Conference’s straw poll in February.
DeSantis came in third, behind Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence, in a March Harvard Caps Harris Poll.
In the two polls when Trump was taken out of the equation, DeSantis led the pack.
Scott, on the other hand, was polling at 2 per cent in the Harvard Caps Harris Poll.
He only received 1 per cent support in the CPAC straw poll once Trump’s name was off the potential candidates’ list.
Johnson has been flirting with moving into the political arena since 2017, when he told GQ there was a ‘real possibility’ he would run in 2020.
He didn’t, but he continued that drumbeat in interviews last year.
‘I would consider a presidential run in the future if that’s what the people wanted,’ the professional wrestler-turned-actor said on the Today show last April. ‘Truly I mean that, and ‘’m not flippant in any way with my answer. That would be up to the people.’
‘So I would wait, and I would listen. I would have my finger on the pulse, my ear to the ground,’ he added.
