A court in this city has acquitted six men accused of arson, rioting and theft during the 2020 riots in northeast Delhi.
Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala heard the case against them.
It was alleged that they looted, vandalised and set fire to a house in Shiv Vihar on February 25, 2020. Later, a complaint of a clinic being set on fire was also added to the case.
In an order issued on Friday, the court noted that the prosecution had submitted the digital video recorder (DVR) as evidence against the accused. “However, there is no witness present to identify any of the accused in the videos,” the court said.
According to the investigating officer (IO) of the case, he did not take any steps to confirm the appearance of any of the suspects in the video clips through scientific research or by comparing the video with the sample photo of the suspects.
“There is therefore no evidence that the suspects appear in those videos,” the court said.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the call data register (CDR) could not be used to determine the exact location of the accused, nor could it be inferred that the accused were involved in the incident.
“I find that there is no incriminating evidence against the defendants,” the judge said. “The charges against the defendants in this case are not proven at all.”
The court acquitted Hashim Ali, Abu Bakar, Mohammad Ajeej, Rashid Ali, Nazmuddin and Mohammad Danish.
The Karawal Nagar police station has filed a case against the accused.
