2 young sisters apparently drowned in a Long Island pond, police say

HOLTSVILLE, NY — Authorities say two young sisters are believed to have drowned in a pond near their Long Island apartment complex.

A family member called police Saturday afternoon to report the girls, ages 2 and 4, missing. Officers and neighbors searched the girls’ Holtsville apartment complex and found them unconscious in a nearby pond shortly before 3:30 p.m., police said.

Life-saving measures were taken and the girls were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, officials said.

Suffolk County homicide detectives are investigating the deaths. Authorities have not released additional details.

Holtsville is located approximately 50 miles east of Manhattan.
