Netflix is bringing not one, not two, but 13 AMC series to its service on August 19, and there are some real gems among them. One of my favorite gross-out comedies, Preacheris there and the delightfully silly gangster drama Gangs of London is also coming.
The full list of shows includes the following:
- A discovery of witches
- Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire season one
- Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice
- Dark winds
- Be afraid of the walking dead
- Gangs of London
- In the Badlands
- Kevin can fuck himself
- Mr. Spade
- Preacher
- That dirty black bag
- The Terror season one
- The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
Looking at the full list of new entries, you can expect our best Netflix series roundup to get a lot bigger next month. Some of these terrifyingly good shows were already streaming on Max in August 2023, so it’s great to see them getting licensed to other platforms.
But with 13 new shows headed to the top streaming service, you might be wondering where to start? Here are three shows in particular that not only have the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of the new entries, but are definitely making my watchlist.
Stay up all night with Louis, Lestat, and these 13 AMC series — coming to Netflix in the US August 19. Kevin can fuck himself
With the radiant Annie Murphy of Schitt’s Creek fame, Kevin can fuck himself is a dark comedy that has a lot of fun subverting familiar sitcom tropes. While season one was a bit uneven, season two has a full 100% on the Tomatometer.
“There has never been a series on TV like Kevin can fuck himself…one of the best new shows of 2021,” writes Concrete playground. The independent says that “the execution does not always match the ambition, but at the best moments Kevin can fuck himself walks a brilliantly uneasy line between comedy and drama. We’ll forgive almost anything for a laugh.”
“It can be as subtle as a blow to the skull,” says The New York Timesbut it is an inventive meta-critique of television.” And according to News.com.au “Kevin can fuck himself not only references sitcom elements, but also uses them as a weapon.”
Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire
It’s 2022 and Louis de Pointe du Lac, a vampire living in Dubai, is telling his life story to a journalist. And what a story it is, full of bitten necks and heaving breasts, and much closer to the source material than the film. It’s “a well-shot and well-cast mix of horror, humor and romance that rips open bodies and throats in equal measure,” according to the Times-Picayune.
“Featuring a quartet of stellar performances, Rice’s bloody, beautiful story is retold on screen,” rich says. “Now finally the chance to wear his strange heart (and guts, and blood, and assorted entrails) proudly on his sleeve.” The Horror Queers Podcast agrees: “The series is beautifully produced and features three great performances from Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid and Bailey Bass. The series explores sex, violence, race, class and homosexuality in a nuanced and entertaining way.”
Dark winds
Dark winds currently holds a full 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It follows Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn as he finds himself besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes in the Navajo Nation in the early 1970s, and has received rave reviews.
The guard says, “It’s an intricate, atmospheric mystery that still feels fast-paced enough to watch in one or two sittings,” while IGN Movies says, “Dark Winds is both a historical tale and a cultural primer for an unashamedly Native American story told through an Indian eye, successfully offering audiences a different perspective and setting for a crime drama.”
It has also been described as “compelling, beautifully shot and propelled by great performances” TIME“Dark winds is a very good show that also happens to be very important,” it added.
