More Premium Bondholders with smaller amounts invested are reaping big returns after National Savings and Investments raised the number of £100,000 and £50,000 prizes.
A total of 10 Premium Bond holders have won £100,000 and £50,000 prizes this month with less than £5,000 invested.
This includes two winners who brought in £50,000 with a holding of £100 – a return of 49,900 per cent. One of these winners from Devon bought the bond in November 1988.
Good things come to those who wait: a person won £50,000 after buying the winning bond in 1963
Meanwhile, another won a prize of £100,000 with a holding of £500 – a return of 19,990 per cent. The winning bond was purchased in April 2005.
The 10 winners all hold below the £5,250 average level of investment that people have in the bonds.
More than 5 million prizes worth more than £333 million will be awarded to the May winners. There were over 121 billion bond numbers eligible for the drawing.
The largest monthly prizes on offer now include two £1 million prizes, 63 prizes worth £100,000 and 123 prizes worth £50,000.
Other notable winners included an individual from Gloucestershire, who won £10,000 from a total £10 position bought in July 1985 – a return of 99,900 per cent.
Meanwhile, a winner from Hereford won a prize of £50,000 with a total value of £7,000 – with the winning bond purchased in December 1963.

Premium bonds remain the country’s most popular savings product, with about 21 million people owning them.
NS&I decided in March to increase the prize money to 3.3 percent – the highest percentage in more than 14 years.
At the current rate of 3.3 per cent, the odds of each £1 bond winning a price are 24,000 to 1.
Last month we revealed how the chances of winning the £1 million jackpot have increased, but winning prizes of £100,000 and £50,000 have become much smaller.
For example, if you have the max holding of £50,000, the odds of winning say £100,000 have dropped from 1 in 392,733 to 1 in 38,855.
And as savings rates rise across the board, we warned over the weekend that it’s wise for savers to buy Premium Bonds towards the end of the month rather than towards the end – find out why.
